Netflix’s “I Am A Killer” is told through the eyes of capital crime inmates. One episode focuses on Victoria Smith, a woman who was sentenced to life imprisonment for her husband’s murder. Betty Frizzell, her sister, adds more context to the story.
Frizzell, an ex-law enforcement officer, believes that her sister’s case was not treated with the care it deserved. The Netflix documentary talks about her efforts to change the situation and deliver justice to Victoria. Betty Frizzell: Who are you?
Frizzell, the former chief of Winfield, Missouri Police Department, had enjoyed an impressive career in law enforcement since 1997 when she joined it. She is well-known for her efforts in creating Sexual Assault Response Teams. She was also the first woman officer to join the S.W.A.T.S.W.A.T. team in Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. After her retirement, she returned to academia and taught criminal justice courses. She holds an M.F.A. in Writing and an M.S.M.S. She is a specialist in Criminal Justice Administration.

She was also a member of the Missouri Department of Corrections Citizens Advisory Board: Probation and Parole Division. Many honors have been bestowed upon her, including the Lincoln County Law Enforcement officer of the year in 2001, the Starfish Award from Seattle Children’s Hospital, and an award of recognition by the State of Washington Department of Health and Social Services for 2016. Her articles have been published in Huffington Post, St. Louis Post Dispatch, and Law Enforcement Action Partnership.

Betty Frizzell resides in Seattle, Washington. She continues her work in criminal justice reform and mental health awareness. She also supported criminal justice reform before the Missouri State Senate and Washington State Senate.
Frizzell is the author and editor of “If You Can’t Stop Cryin’ You Can’t Get Here No More, ” which lays out her theories on what actually happened that night. She believes it was not Victoria who killed Chris Isaac but her son Kenny Smith.
Frizzell’s efforts in proving her sister’s innocence have also caught the attention of other inmates. In a Facebook post, she shared that she receives letters from prisoners who have read her book and want to tell their stories. A prisoner had written her entire life story in more than 200 pages. She believed Frizzell was the right person to tell it.

In 2018, after Kenny’s arrest in Victoria, Frizzell set out on a journey to find him. She also documented her journey via social media. She traveled all the way from Canada to Germany to find Kenny, who was last seen in public.
Although it was not an easy task, she finally found Kenny in Frankfurt after searching the streets for his photo. Frizzell keeps updating Facebook about Kenny’s status. She also said that she was trying to get Kenny’s conservatorship while he was in a German prison. Her family is everything to Frizzell and justice.
