Lifetime’s “Left for Dead the Ashley Reeves Story,’ as the title suggests, is a film that explores the 2006 attempt to murder Columbia High School junior Ashley Reeves, who was murdered by the former instructor.
On the afternoon of May 27, the 17-year-old tangled with the then 26-year-old Samson Shelton, which led to an altercation that eventually caused her to lose her life. Who is Samson Shelton?
In 2005, Samson Shelton worked as an instructor at Freeburg High drivers and physical-education instructor. He was also an aspiring professional wrestler who referred to himself as “The Teacher.” While many thought he was attractive and charming, Others believed that Samson was somewhat self-absorbed. However, the truth was only revealed when the police began interrogating the man on the 28th of April. He had been spotted on video surveillance the night before the nightclub, and Ashley’s friends claimed they were in a relationship. At first, Samson seemed cooperative, declaring that Samson and Ashley were purely platonic regardless of the claims, and they played basketball together. He also said that Ashley became increasingly obsessed with him, leading him to shun her. As time went on, Samson changed his narrative often. From claiming he only hugged her to admitting to sexual contact between him and Ashley inside a car to claiming a breakup discussion that he initiated. He moved in various directions before admitting that he strangled the victim using his belt and hands. The interrogation took more than 12 hours. He also divulged her location and was subsequently accused and arrested.

Even though Samson Shelton confessed, the man was quickly granted bail and put under house arrest. In the days before his scheduled trial, police were called to an attempt to commit suicide phone call at home. He had consumed a potentially fatal combination of prescription medication and alcohol. There was a written “do not resuscitate” sign on his chest. However, when EMTs came in trying to save him from death, he assaulted them, spitting and punching them. After one month of medical assessments and defense by the prosecution that Samson was just trying to get empathy from jurors and the public as viable participants, Samson was confirmed to be mentally fit to be tried. However, at the end of the day, in 2007, he signed the plea deal approved by Ashley’s parents and The District Attorney’s Office. According to the agreement decision, he was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years of prison.

Samson could not speak to any courtroom or apologize for his crime if offered the opportunity. Therefore, even at 41, he’s still incarcerated in Galesburg’s medium security Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg. The parole process is scheduled to begin in the 2024’s spring, but the original date for his discharge is April 22nd, 2027. It is also important to note that Samson was charged with attempted battery in his name for allegedly attacking people who responded to his suicide attempt. However, they were removed in February 2010.
