The Showtime series ‘American Rust’ is an American-made crime drama that revolves around a small town and the dilemma its Chief of Police faces when his wife’s son is accused of murder. The show is an eerie, melancholy slow-burn narrative that depicts the town’s decline from its peak, just like most of its residents are working class.

American Rust Filming Locations
“American Rust” is filmed in Pennsylvania, where various cities are utilized to put the show’s backdrop. The story is set in the town of a Pennsylvania town that is located in the Rust Belt. This region consists of mostly midwestern and northeastern industrial towns, which are declining. The show’s production was set to start on March 20, 2020.

But due to the COVID-19 virus, the project was put on hold before the primary filming could begin. Production began beginning of the month of March and was completed by the beginning of the month of August 2021. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
“American Rust” takes place in the fictional village of Buell, located in Fayette County in Pennsylvania. The production utilizes several locations within and within the town of Pittsburgh to portray the fictional town. 31st Street Studios, located at 77 31st Street, serves as the basis of the production. The filming studio is equipped with at least eight soundstages, additional space available for office catering, and an art studio.
The crew uses one of the Carrie Blast Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark and former site of Homestead Steel Works. Homestead Steel Works, to film a lot of the scenes. The no longer operational steel plant can be found at 801 Carrie Furnace Boulevard, in the town of Swissvale industry in Pittsburgh.
A backlot at Churchill Crossings is used to construct sets for exterior use to film. It is located at 1310 Beulah Road, in a suburb of Pittsburgh. Its exteriors include a trailer and a cabin, both of which depict homes for the main protagonists (Grace Del and Grace Del), who were constructed on the site. There is also the State Correctional Institution – Pittsburgh, which is located at 3001 Beaver Avenue, is also used for filming some scenes and is also located at Pitcairn Road.
Other Locations in Allegheny County
Monroeville, located around 14 miles from Pittsburgh, is heavily used for the film. Furthermore, Tilbrook and Stroschein Roads were apparently shut down during the filming of season one. A bridge bar in the Borough of Rankin is also said to be utilized for filming several scenes, and so is a Victorian residence in McKeesport. Some other Allegheny County locations used in the film include Clairton, Oakdale, Allison Park, Glassport, Sewickley, Penn Hills, and Braddock.

Other Locations in Pennsylvania
The show occurs within the larger Monongahela Valley region, including parts of Pennsylvania and neighboring West Virginia. The area was once renowned for its high-quality steel industry. To portray the region realistically, the crew filmed scenes in various cities and neighborhoods in Pennsylvania, such as Ambridge, one of the boroughs of Beaver County; Portersville and Harmony in Butler County; Donora, one of the boroughs of Washington County; Apollo, one of the boroughs of Armstrong County; and Perryopolis and Belle Vernon in Fayette County.

The production also uses the State Correctional Institution – Greensburg situated inside Hempfield Township and the city of Monessen (around Third Street and Donner Avenue) in Westmoreland County for occasional filming.
Lensing is also filmed at the City in New Castle and the McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County. Numerous well-known spots in these places are used as backdrops, stitched to give the character-driven town Buell its distinctive Pennsylvania style. The production utilizes the natural landscape to give the show a convincing appearance.
