Ryan Condal, George R. R. Martin, and George R. R. Martin created HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” It is an action fantasy show. Based on sections of Martin’s 2018 novel ‘Fire & Blood, it depicts the civil war between two factions of the Targaryen dynasty.
This war of succession, also known in Westeros history as the dance of dragons, marks the end of Targaryen’s dominance on the continent. Here are some suggestions for viewers who have enjoyed ‘House of the Dragon.’ These shows are similar to House of the Dragon and can be viewed on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

1. The Outpost (2018-2021).
“The Outpost” tells the story about Talon, a young female from the human sub-species the Blackblood. Talon, a young girl, was one of the few survivors after her village was massacred. Vowing revenge, she sets out on a dangerous journey that eventually leads her to an abandoned post. With the support of her allies, Talon tracks down those responsible for her family’s deaths. The Outpost is a continuation of ‘House of the Dragon’, where revenge and its inevitable consequences are prominent themes.

2. Legend of the Seeker (2008-2010)
Based on Terry Goodkind’s fantasy novel series “The Sword of Truth,” “Legend of the Seeker” tells the story of Richard Cypher. He is an ordinary young man who discovers that he is the Seeker of Truth. Richard joins Confessor Kahlan small and the First Wizdicus Zu’l Zorander on a dangerous but life-altering quest to defeat the Darken Rahl. Although the story of “Legend of the Seeker” is more traditional fantasy than it is fantasy fiction, it still has enough disturbing elements to keep any ‘House of the Dragon fan happy.
3. The Letter to the King (2020).
A retelling of the 1962 Dutch novel ‘Debrief Voor de Koning,’ ‘The Letter to the King’ is the story of Tiuri (Amir Wilson). Tiuri is just about to complete his trials when he meets a dying Black Knight who gives him a letter and promises that he will deliver the letter to the ruler in a kingdom across the Great Mountains. The Letter for the King is often called a “Game of Thrones” for children. It’s a pleasant and entertaining watch.
4. The Shannara Chronicles (2016 – 2017)
Based on Terry Brook’s trilogy, “The Sword of Shannara” books, “The Shannara Chronicles” tells the story of Wil and Amberle — three young people who are tasked with saving their world. The story is set in the fictional Four Lands. The Ellcrys is an ancient magical tree that acts as a lock between the Four Lands (the Forbidding) and the Forbidding (where the demons of this world are exterminated). The Ellcrys are dying, and the heroes must save them. Allanon, the last druid, is there to help them. The Sword of Shannara trilogy, like ‘A Song of Ice and Fire, is an important entry into fantasy literature. ‘The Shannara Chronicles is a decent adaptation of it.
5. The Legend of Vox Machina (2022-20)
Developed from campaign 1 of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role”The Legend of Vox Machina’, this animated series is for adults. It takes place in Exandria and centers around the adventurer Vox Machina. While the majority of the stories in the series are based upon plot threads from “Critical Role,” there is also some original content. The Legend of Vox Machina, like ‘House of the Dragon, has lots of violence, sex, and magic. The entire story is built on dark humor, which is something that does not often reappear on this list.

6. Britannia (2017-)
Britannia is a historical fiction series that takes place in the first century AD. The local tribes and Druids resist the Romans’ attempts to control the island. Martin often draws on history to create his stories, especially English history. “Game of Thrones” is loosely inspired by the 15th-century conflict known as the Wars of the Roses. “House of the Dragon” is partly inspired by the 12th-century civil war known as the Anarchy. Although “Britannia” is set much earlier, Martin has included historical elements into his story and turned them to 11.
7. Kingdom (2019-).
“KINGDOM” is a South Korean series that combines political intrigue with fantasy, horror, and fantasy. It’s a great example of the sweeping ‘Game of Thrones Universe.’ The story is set in an alternate Joseon period. Three years have passed since Imjin War. Lee Chang, Crown Prince and heir presumptive, discovers that his father’s recent bout with illness is not as it seems. Lee Chang, Crown Prince and heir presumptive to the throne, is threatened by political rivals. He ventures outside of the capital to discover the truth.
8. The Wheel of Time (2021-).
The Wheel of Time was developed from the namesake series of books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The Wheel of Time, like Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” is considered a landmark in fantasy literature. The story centers on a group consisting of young people living in the isolated village of Two Rivers. Their lives are forever changed by the Aes Sedai Moiraine ( Rosamund Pike). They run from the evil that has decimated their village and discover that one of them, the Dragon Reborn is a powerful channeler for the One Power that caused irreparable harm to the world in their previous lives.
9. Shadow and Bone (2021-21-)
Leigh Bardugo’s Web adaptation of two books in the Grishaverse, “Shadow and Bone,” tells the story of Alina, an orphan girl who is a cartographer for the First Army of the Rajka Nation, a nation based in tsarist Russia. Alina learns she is a Grisha. This is the practitioner of small science, which is often misunderstood as magic. Alina discovers that she is a Sun summoner, the only Grisha capable of manipulating and summoning light. House of the Dragon’s Shadow and Bone, like House of the Dragon’s, is dark fantasy at its core and draws heavily from history and real-world politics.
10. The Sandman (2022-).
Magic happens when the source material creator is involved in the development process. This is what happened with “House of the Dragon,” and it also happens with “The Sandman.” The original comic book series ran for 75 issues from January 1989 to March 1996. Dream or Morpheus, the personifications of nightmares and dreams, is featured on the Netflix series. He also has his siblings, Destiny, Death, Delirium Desire, Despair, and Destruction. After imprisonment for 106 years, Morpheus finally gets out and starts repairing the damage done.

11. The Witcher (2021-).
Based on a series by Polish author Andrzej SAPkowski,’ the Witcher centers around three main characters: Geralt of Rivia ( Henry Cavill), titular Witcher; sorceress Yennefer, and Crown Princess Ciriof Cintra. Their paths lead them all together, even though their origins differ. The story takes place in a world with twisted versions (or originals) of folklore and fairytales. The Witchers are the hunters of anything that goes bump into the darkness. For a House of the Dragon fan, ‘The Witcher has everything.
12. His Dark Materials (2019-2022).
Based on Philip Pullman’s namesake trilogy,’ His Dark Materials is fantasy drama series. It takes place in a multi-world world, and the story moves back and forth between them. People’s souls can take on the form of different animals in one of these worlds. These are known as daemons. Lyra Belacqua is one of the main characters in the series and finds herself drawn into a conflict of cosmic proportions. “His Dark Materials” mirrors the modern world through fantasy metaphors. The former focuses more on organized religion, much like “House of the Dragon.”
13. Game of Thrones (2011)-2019
D. B. Weiss and David Benioff created ‘Game of Thrones.’ This subgenre changed how fantasy was perceived in the minds of many of its viewers. After House Targaryen has fallen, the television adaptation of Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire is set 200 years later. The great game of Power continues as other noble houses fight for Westeros. In the east, one last member of the old dynasty brings back the dragons, and the cold winds start to howl in the north.
