The story of the original season, which premiered on February 10, 2022, started with Susan Ryeland, the editor of Alan Conway’s mystery novel series. Ryeland received the manuscript for Alan’s latest crime-mystery series. This manuscript was to be the last novel in the series. She reads the manuscript and realizes that it is incomplete. The last chapter, in which the identity of the murderer is revealed, is missing. This makes her immediately aware that the mystery author had committed suicide, which she later discovers is false.
Susan is curious about the missing chapter, so she sets out to find it. Susan realizes, mid-investigation, that every story Alan wrote in his mystery novel was inspired by or based on a real incident. This makes her think that Alan’s death and all of these incidents could be related. She discovers that her boss Charles Clover had hidden the missing chapter in his drawer and that Alan used his manuscript to commit suicide.
After this revelation, Susan is exposed by Charles and threatened by Charles’s knowledge that she plans to report to the police. He tries to kill Susan, and Susan saves herself from his crazy boss, who murdered a friend and a human to increase their publishing house’s success. He also attempts to set the last chapter of the manuscript ablaze.
