Jayson, his siblings, and the children were at Jayson’s house for a family barbecue on April 25. Jayson was returning to his car to roll his windows up when another vehicle approached Jayson’s area. Jayson then got into an argument with the driver. The incident ended in Jayson being shot once in his lower right abdomen. The bullet also reached his lower left side. Despite resuscitation efforts, Jayson died. Jayson was shot with a.357 Magnum.

Joel Atkin was the man driving the car. He was 22 years old and a criminal justice major. Atkin surrendered immediately to the police and admitted to shooting Jayson. According to the show, Joel was on his way to his mother’s to pay his bills. He passed Jayson’s party, which ended in the shooting. The investigation into the circumstances leading to the shooting was initiated, and he was taken into custody.
Inquiry revealed that Jayson stopped by to close Jayson’s windows, and Joel passed by. Then rudely asked to get out of Jayson’s way. Jayson demanded Joel slow down, and he got out. Witnesses said that Joel was carrying a cell phone in one hand and a gun in the other. He also had a permit for this firearm. Jayson approached Joel, 22 years old. Joel called 911. Jayson was killed when Joel shot twice during the scuffle.
Joel told police that he stopped the car after he felt he’d hit something. Joel then claimed Jayson had attacked him. Jayson’s brother Vincent witnessed the shooting and ran to help him. Joel pointed a gun at Jayson and threatened to shoot him. Joel claimed that there was a fight, but the 911 call did not record any of it. Jayson’s family claimed that Jayson was carrying a knife; Joel said that Vincent had taken the knife after the shooting.

Where is Joel Atkin Now?
Joel shared a different story about how it all started on the show. Joel claimed that several people stopped him as he turned onto the street. Joel claims Jayson then attacked him unprovoked. Joel claimed self-defense at his trial in 2010. However, the jury did not see it that way. He was found guilty of three-degree murder, attempted aggravating assault, and recklessly endangering other people. Joel was sentenced to 17 to 34 years in prison for the charges. Twelve to 24 years were for the murder charge. According to prison records, Joel is still being held at the State Correctional Institution Albion in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
